From Assassination to Resurrection

Following a transformative convening with Dr. Molefi K. Asante at the MKA Institute in Philadelphia, the EFM Executive Action Committee is calling leaders, clergy, scholars, and people of faith to Memphis for a national conversation and sacred time of reflection.

 

This gathering will explore the Black presence in the biblical text, the historic journey of African American Christians, and the actions that have brought Black people in America to our present moment. Together, we will engage in serious, disciplined conversation about how a knowledge-based understanding of Blacks in the Bible and beyond can help free our people from the assimilationist mind trap and lead us toward spiritual, intellectual, and communal liberation.

 

Using the history of the Civil Rights Movement as our guide and encouragement, we will reflect on the powerful connection between the biblical story of Exodus and the Black freedom struggle in America. We will consider the oppression of a people, Moses’ call to liberation, the journey toward the Promised Land, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final message, in which he declared that he had seen the Promised Land.

 

On and near sacred ground connected to our history, we will ask: What does the Promised Land look like for Black people in the 21st century? How do we continue moving toward resurrection, freedom, and liberation after the trauma, sacrifice, and unfinished work of the movement? And what faithful steps must we take now to build spaces that can hold the next phase of the Black experience in America?

 

This gathering is for those committed to the courageous work of remembering, learning, discerning, and building. It is an invitation to spiritual, intellectual, and communal labor rooted in courage, vision, and faith.

 

During our time together, we will visit historic sites that speak to Black memory, struggle, creativity, and liberation.

Event Cost: $200 minimum donation per person (does not include hotel accommodations or meals).
